Rich Mitchell has been in the wood business in one form or another for most of his life and has experience in every aspect of the process. After years of working for other mills, he decided to venture out with a company of his own that he could share with his sons, Corey and Steve. In January of this year, they made their dream come true and opened the doors to their own mill they affectionately named Mossy Head Lumber, Inc.
Together, the trio offers multi-generational experience as well as a family connection and most importantly, a love and appreciation for the wood. They are proud of their state-of-the-art equipment and watching them work together is like watching a well-oiled machine. The bonding between them is evident as they barely have a need to speak, instinctively knowing what to do at the right time to get the job done flawlessly.
Their product is the highly coveted reclaimed wood that is retrieved from the depths of rivers and swamp areas. These logs date back to the early 1800’s when lumber was transported via waterways. Many of them sunk to the bottom where the cool temperatures of the water and years of being submerged preserved the wood into beautiful pieces that are used today for multitudes of building and decorative purposes.
Rich and his sons mill quality products out of Pecky Cypress, Sinker Cypress, Tide Water and New Growth Cypress as well as Pine. They cut the logs to order and sell to companies as well as individuals and specialize in custom homes. Customers can literally pick out their own log and have it milled to any specification they want whether it’s for exposed beams, trusses, planked ceilings or a gorgeous dinner table and hardwood flooring. To quote Corey and Steve, “you never know what you're going to get until you cut into the wood. The colors and textures are always different. It’s not just a piece of wood, it’s nature’s artwork.” Rich says they have sawdust in their blood and that may be true.
