The Mitchell family is passionate about their business and love to share their beautiful recovered cypress and pine from the bottoms of rivers and swamps but they also respect the environment and pride themselves on leaving nature in balance. That’s why the entire Mitchell family decided to make it a family affair and seek a Master Deadhead Logger certification making them the first ones to be awarded this designation.
Rich Mitchell, with over 15 years experience in retrieving and milling sinker cypress, recently decided to open his family sawmill with his sons, Corey and Steven. Both sons also have many years of experience in this field. The 86 acre lumber mill is located in Northwest Florida in the community of Mossy Head, Florida right off of Interstate I-10 between Crestview and Defuniak Springs. Their love of river and swamp reclaimed cypress and pine motivates them every day to face the dangers of retrieving these century old logs from the depths of the river and swamp beds then transferring them to the mill where they saw them for wholesale and retail as well as custom orders.
Unveiling the hidden beauty within the log’s interior is the highlight of the process and each one reveals unique characteristics that make them truly one-of-a-kind treasures. They find purpose and accomplishment in their work by being able to make a living reclaiming nature’s artwork and exposing the full beauty of each piece of wood with their milling expertise before presenting it to their customers. Part of the attraction of their business is the fact they are able to work in their beautiful surroundings and because each of them respects the environment and wants to preserve it in it’s natural state. Getting the Master Deadhead Logger Certification was simply the natural next step to setting Mossy Head Lumber Company apart from the rest. Not only did Rich and his sons seek the training but his wife, Dawn, and daughter, Lucy, also completed the program and participate in the family business as well.
Mossy Head Lumber Company mills everything out of cypress and pine from beams, planks and other building materials to wood for hardwood floors, inlaid ceilings, cabinets and furniture and everything in between. They market to homebuilders, commercial builders, architects, building supply companies and to individuals. Available inventories include an abundance of sinker cypress, pecky cypress, deadhead cypress, tidewater cypress, new and old growth cypress along with other specialty woods such as sinker pine, black walnut, cedar, and more.
Rich Mitchell says, "Once the remaining logs are recovered, there won’t be any more like them in our lifetime, making them extinct". He feels privileged to be able to work with his sons and to share nature’s beauty with others. In his own words, “We all have sawdust in our blood so we’ll be doing this for a long time”.
