The Mitchells are a tight-knit family. Rich and his wife, Dawn, are transplants as many Florida residents are these days. Originally from St. Louis, husband and wife along with their three grown children fit right into the Mossy Head community like they’ve always been there. The love of their family and appreciation of the land is evident in everything they do. The family works and plays together savoring their moments with each other, enjoying their free time on the river, camping out, hunting, fishing and epic mud riding events.
The Mitchells have found a way to carry that passion for family and the outdoors into a career. Rich had experience in the sinker log mill and retrieval business for years. He saw an opportunity to take that knowledge and develop it into a business he could share with his family. He took that dream and turned into a reality. Now, he and his two sons, Corey and Steve, meet up each morning at their beloved Mossy Head Lumber Company which they affectionately named after their community. Daughter, Lucy, has been learning the trade lately as well. There, they craft pieces of sinker cypress, pine, and other river and swamp reclaimed wood into beautiful works that they call “nature’s artwork”. The mill itself is nothing fancy - just a mega saw, a high end pole barn of sorts, a dry kiln and a lot of rough inventory waiting to find it’s Cinderella moment.
The Mitchells are authentic, the real deal. Rich meets you with a smile and a handshake and the excitement over the treasure he is going to share with you is written all over his face. His sons are busy hand-picking precise pieces to meet their customers’ requests which might be cypress mantels, exposed beams, hardwood planks for floors and ceilings or decorative corbels for a new home. It could also be a large order for a contractor or builder because Mossy Head Lumber Company can handle any type of job, no matter the size or requirements. They take pride on delivering quality products but also realize how fortunate they are to be doing something they love together. Corey Mitchell says, “you never know what you’re going to get until you cut into the log and expose the hidden beauty”. Steve Mitchell seconds that sentiment and adds, “every day is a good time”, working with his brother and dad.
The entire Mitchell family is bonded together in their daily lives which includes Mossy Head Lumber Company. They take their job and their responsibility to produce quality products to their customers very seriously. They decided that the entire family including Dawn, would be the first in the business to seek and obtain the FDEP Master Deadhead Logger Certification and they did so successfully. The commitment and love of the job is evident among this family as well as the closeness they share with each other. Another generation has recently been welcomed to the family - Corey and Holly had a baby girl named Maddie. The Mitchells are truly blessed and they know it!
