River and swamp reclaimed wood has been a top choice of builders and contractors for a good while now. It’s not surprising due to its durability. It’s a great choice for structural and other applications where integrity in strength is a necessity. In the past, the unique characteristics of the water aged logs was looked upon as damaged goods - not good enough to be exposed as a decorative feature. The pits and striations found in pecky cypress and other sinker logs were considered flaws. The fact that it has a very distinctive look was ignored and covered up behind ceilings and walls. You could say it was looked upon as an ugly duckling.

That has changed and this unique gift of reclaimed sinker cypress and other sinker wood created from nature has found a new appreciation in the design and decorative world. No longer are the variations frowned upon but celebrated. People are realizing the fact that every piece is different and a true treasure. Exposed beams, hardwood flooring, wall paneling, cabinets in the kitchen and offices, ceilings and basically, anything you can imagine can be milled. If you can dream it, it can be created. Unfortunately, there is a limited supply of this natural treasure.
This wood is derived from logs that were over 100 years old when they were harvested back in the early 1800’s. Loggers transported them by floating them down rivers and other waterways. Many of these sunk to the bottom where they have remained in the cool depth of the water, preserved and enhanced by the minerals in the soil. Once these beauties have all been retrieved, they will be gone forever.
